Rather Random Thoughts

The main form of communication among moms (mums, really) is texting. No one calls your mobile unless it's urgent and when they call your home they practically apologize for interrupting you. Emails still happen, but not as frequently as texting. Texting is used to invite your kids over, to rsvp for a kids bday party, to arrange a coffee, and even used to invite the whole class to an xmas party. It has taken some getting used to. I find it a pain in the butt and very impersonal, esp when talking is how you get to know people and make friends. I recently learned that your home phone can even receive texts - BT (british telecom) has a computer generated voice that calls you and it says, "You have a text message" and then it reads it to you!!

Watching the house of commons or the house of parliament live on tv is really unnerving. In real life, the brits are so reserved, quiet and undemonstrative but in the houses, they are SO RUDE it makes me uncomfortable - the openly heckle the prime minister! I can't watch it or if I do I barely hear a word they're saying, I'm squirming and just watching their reactions to what the person who is talking is saying. It's just shocking to me.

"Mummy" is what most of us moms are called here. "Yummy Mummy" is a popular phrase that you will find on diaper bags, in advertising to moms, and misc items like coffee cups. Yummy Mummy's lazy, sloppy friend is "Slummy Mummy." You can buy coffee cups with that on it too.

So this begs the question? Would others refer to me as a Yummy or a Slummy Mummy? I'm not sure I want to know the answer :).

I love your insights to the culture there--so enlightening! I wish I could tell you in person rather than a form of a text, but aren't blog comments still welcome :) ?

I hate texting. also those people that won't talk to you unless you text them. so frustrating.

So about the mummy thing. I have been obsessed with Doctor Who lately. There is one episode where a little boy walks around saying "mummy, are you my mummy?". It's kind of freaky, but ANder walks around saying it now. Greatest show ever. Do you watch it there much?

I hope you're feeling yummy, and not slummy, or that'd be crummy. So do they call larger moms "Bummy Mummy?"
